On Country Learning Measure: Central Australian Schools Action Plans

The Plan for a Better, Safer Future for Central Australia: On Country Learning Measure (OCLM) provides $40 million of additional funding to schools in Central Australia to support students and their families to engage in education and pathways to employment on-country.

The Northern Territory and Australian Governments are committed to improving education outcomes for young people in Central Australia through strong and ongoing partnerships with families and communities.

The funding will support improved student enrolment, engagement, wellbeing, and learning outcomes at schools in Central Australia through community driven responses supporting improved community engagement.

How funds will be used

The OCLM will strengthen educational experiences and outcomes in Central Australia schools including through:

  • intensive literacy and numeracy support
  • increased quality flexible learning for secondary students with a focus on students obtaining qualifications that align to jobs in the industries in their communities and regions and/or provide skills in industries that support community life
  • increased employment of local Aboriginal staff in schools to support cultural wellbeing, music, art, language and identity
  • targeted engagement, re-engagement and attendance initiatives, which are culturally responsive
  • On-Country Learning initiatives that support two-way learning opportunities, foster culturally responsive learning environments, and invite Indigenous language and culture (ILC) into the day-to-day delivery of curriculum, including through bilingual education programs (where community support exists)
  • increases allied health services to deliver a selection of universal and targeted services to support inclusion of all students in learning.

School action plans

Central schools and their communities have developed tailored solutions to better improve student outcomes influenced by cultural contexts local decision-making.

With the community consultations now finalised, each school community has established an agreed school action plan on the way forward. School action plans have been developed in partnership with communities, including First Nations families, relevant cultural authority, staff and students and reflect community aspirations for education.
