Industry placement framework

An industry placement is a short-term, unpaid opportunity where secondary school students work with a host business. The primary purpose of an industry placement is to provide students with a structured and supervised experience that allows them to gain a firsthand insight into a work environment. This experience may include work shadowing, observing operations, and performing tasks appropriate to their skills and abilities under instruction and supervision.

Effective industry placements equip students with essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes to make informed decisions about their career. This plays a crucial role in supporting students to transition from school into further employment, education, or training.

The department is committed to fostering meaningful educational and career outcomes by offering students opportunities to participate in industry placements as an integral part of their educational journey.

This framework, along with its associated policies and procedures, explains the requirements for delivering industry placements in Northern Territory (NT) Government schools.

This policy applies to the implementation and management of work experience programs conducted by NT Government schools. Participation in work experience programs is not a compulsory curriculum requirement. However, where such a program is offered, schools must adhere to this policy in conjunction with the industry placement framework.

This policy provides the must do actions and activities when schools coordinate work experience placements for students, it clearly states the:

  • guidance for staff involved in the development, management, and coordination of work experience programs
  • defined roles, responsibilities, and expectations for all parties participating in work experience programs.

Vocational work placement procedures

Vocational work placement (VWP) refers to a structured learning experience where students undertaking vocational education and training (VET) are placed in a workplace environment. These placements complement classroom learning by providing hands-on exposure to industry practices, tools, and techniques, enabling students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings.

VWP is a key component of VET for Secondary Students and sometimes VWP is required for students to achieve competencies in their chosen course.

The department employs a team of industry engagement coordinators who work with schools, students, parents, registered training organisations, and local businesses to coordinate VWP.

The vocational work placement procedures provide:

  • clear instruction to all stakeholders involved in the process of coordinating VWP
  • defined roles, responsibilities, and expectations for all parties participating in VWP.
