Respect and responsibility in schools

Respect and responsibility are the foundations of safe and strong schools. School communities thrive when there is trust, connection and shared responsibilities. Safe, respectful and inclusive school environments are essential for learning and wellbeing.

The Respect and Responsibility in Schools Framework sets out clear, shared expectations for students, staff, parents, carers, visitors, volunteers and contractors.

Through respectful and responsible behaviour schools are safe and inclusive, all children are known, valued and supported to reach their full potential.

Our shared responsibility

Everyone who enters or engages with NT Government school has the right to feel safe, supported and respected. With strong partnerships, a culture of kindness and respectful communication, we strengthen belonging, wellbeing, attendance and learning.

Respectful behaviour is required from every adult and every student, every day. Violence, aggression and abuse will not be tolerated in any Northern Territory Government school.

The use of social media or online platforms to criticise, harass, intimidate or otherwise disrespect a school, its staff or its students is also unacceptable.

Schools will take action early and consistently to address inappropriate behaviour.

Clear expectations for behaviour

The framework outlines four shared expectations that apply on school grounds and during school activities.

  • Safety and wellbeing - We act safely, follow instructions and report and respond to concerns early to protect the wellbeing of everyone in our schools.
  • Respect - We show respect by treating everyone with dignity, kindness and fairness and consistently communicating in clear, calm and respectful ways.
  • Responsibility - We show responsibility by taking ownership of our actions and choices, maintaining high yet achievable standards, acting with honesty and integrity and addressing concerns positively.
  • Partnership - We work together to support learning, attendance and wellbeing, sharing information, supporting participation in our schools and collaborating to solve problems.
