Boosting literacy and numeracy - teachers

Boosting Literacy and Numeracy is about helping every student to have the strongest start in life by investing in what matters most – foundational literacy and numeracy skills.

Every NT Government school will embrace a consistent, evidence-based approach to explicit teaching, which reflects how students learn best. It involves teachers breaking down concepts into small, more manageable steps, enabling students to build understanding and independence.

Improved resources and professional learning provided to our NT Government school teachers will help reduce teacher workloads.

The Boosting Literacy and Numeracy Plan will ensure all NT Government schools are more consistent for students, families and teachers.

Our plan is built on 3 key pillars for student achievement:

  • high quality resources for teachers and students, and professional learning for school staff
    • planning resources for schools, outlining what to teach each term and each year
    • clear guidance on curriculum delivery and effective teaching strategies for how students learn best
    • sequenced lessons and teacher resources for explicit teaching of reading and mathematics
    • ongoing training and support for school leaders and educators to build knowledge and confidence in teaching reading and mathematics
    • access to Northern Territory developed professional learning suite focused on evidence-based teaching practices.
  • screening assessment for early identification of students at risk
    • systems to support schools with early identification of student learning needs through screening, monitoring and assessment
    • required phonics and number checks for Year one students
  • intentional and planned support for students falling behind
    • guidance on effective assessment strategies to track progress
    • targeted support for students struggling with reading and mathematics.
