VET in the NTCET

Students who successfully complete their senior secondary education are awarded the Northern Territory Certificate of Education and Training (NTCET).

The NTCET provides students with access to flexible learning arrangements where students have increased opportunities to develop the business, interpersonal and employment-related skills needed for the future.

Nationally recognised training undertaken through vocational education and training (VET) can contribute to the completion of the NTCET. The requirements and limitations of how VET credits are be applied to the NTCET is explained in this article.

VET and NTCET Requirements

Nominal hours refers to the number of hours notionally required to train and achieve a unit of competency. The nominal hours will determine how many credits a VET qualification or unit of competency will contribute to a student’s NTCET.

70 nominal hours will equate to 10 credits in the NTCET.

Requirements for VET to contribute to the NTCET:

  • The unit must receive a ‘competent’ result
  • The units within the qualification must total to a minimum of 35 nominal hours e.g. 35 nominal hours equate to 5 credits in the NTCET
  • The unit must form a part of a nationally recognised qualification.

For nominal hour allocations for units of competencies and maximum hour allocation for qualifications, view the Victorian training package purchasing guides.

VET and NTCET limitations

A total of 200 credits is required to complete the NTCET and 40 credits are attained through compulsory subjects including literacy, numeracy and Personal Learning Plan (PLP) or Exploring Identities and Futures (EIF). VET can be used to attain the remaining 160 credits required for the NTCET. For information on if whether a qualification will be recognised as Stage 1 or Stage 2 credits, please visit to the VET Recognition Register.

A maximum of two Certificate I qualifications, including partial completions can contribute to the NTCET. There is no limit to the number of Certificate II and above qualifications which can contribute to the NTCET.

VET and ATAR

VET can be considered as Recognised Studies in the ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) calculation.

For completed VET to count as Recognised Studies, it must be:

  • Certificate III level (or higher) in the AQF (Australian Quality Framework).
  • Recognised as Stage 2 in the NTCET and equate to at least 10 credits.

Recognised Studies, including VET, can only count to a maximum of 20 credits in an ATAR. Students also need to satisfy all other university entrance criteria.

For further information refer to SATAC Recognised Studies.

Apprenticeships and traineeships

Schools must take into consideration the length of time required to complete the qualification being undertaken as an apprenticeship or traineeship. If the student is not expected to have the units of competency required for their NTCET by the end of Year 12, the school should implement appropriate processes to monitor the student’s NTCET progression once they have left school.

Students can request that their qualifications be added to their School's Online profile after they have left school.
