Orientation and induction for teachers

The Northern Territory Department of Education and Training supports a culture of professional growth in all schools across the Northern Territory.

The department acknowledges that teachers commence in schools at varying career stages, with a range of knowledge and experiences. To build on existing knowledge and ensure new teachers are set up for success, orientation and induction are provided as part of the onboarding process into the Northern Territory Public Sector (NTPS), Department of Education and Training, and workplace.

Onboarding enables new teachers to meet role specific outcomes, professional growth goals and wellbeing needs. It also contributes to workplace safety as it supports new employees to align their practice with NT Government (NTG) and department regulations, values and priorities.

The components of onboarding for new teachers in NTG schools are:

  • NTG orientation
  • Department of Education and Training orientation
  • local induction at the school
  • ongoing support through professional learning, mentoring and networking opportunities.
