What is NAPLAN?

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It has been an everyday part of the school calendar since 2008. Due to Covid-19, the NAPLAN assessment did not proceed in 2020.

Why is it important for students?

NAPLAN tests skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, including reading, writing, spelling and numeracy.

It is one tool teachers use to identify areas of student strengths and areas for improvement and to work with that student and their family by providing further teaching in the relevant area.

How can parents prepare their children for NAPLAN?

NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students have already been learning through the school curriculum.

The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to reassure your child that NAPLAN tests are just one part of their school program.

Teachers will ensure students are familiar with the test formats and will provide appropriate support and guidance.

Why is it important for schools and teachers?

Schools and teachers benefit from NAPLAN as it enables them to identify areas within their teaching and learning programs that may require more focus or a change of tactic in the delivery of that particular part of the curriculum.

NAPLAN tests are one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process; they do not replace the extensive ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student’s performance.

Where can I find more information?

If you have any questions about your child’s preparation for NAPLAN, you should make a time to speak with child’s teacher.
