NAPLAN assessment and reporting

The National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assesses all Australian students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9.

From 2023, NAPLAN will be held in term 1.

Moving the test forward aims to make this valuable data set available earlier in the year to:

  • inform teaching and learning programs
  • give parents information about their child's performance.

Participation by schools nationally in NAPLAN is required under the Schools Assistance Act 2008.

For more information about NAPLAN, go to the Northern Territory Government website.

Results and reports

Annual reporting

As of 2023, a new proficiency standard will be introduced for NAPLAN reporting. The standard will replace the numerical NAPLAN bands and the national minimum standard with the following 4 levels of achievement:

  • exceeding
  • strong
  • developing
  • needs additional support.

The ISRs received by parents and carers will continue to show the national average and the range of achievement for the middle 60% of students in their year level, allowing comparison of a child’s achievement against these measures.

For national reporting, 2023 will mark the start of a new time series, now that all students are online and the tests are being held in March instead of May. Results from 2023 on will not be directly compared with results from 2008 to 2022.

Detailed information on the knowledge and skills being measured in each NAPLAN assessment will be made available on the NAP website.

Information around school performance is published in summary and national reports as well as being available on the MySchool website.
