Review of Secondary Education in the Northern Territory

The Northern Territory Government have accepted all recommendations of the Review of Secondary Education in the Northern Territory (NT).

The Review of Secondary Education in the Northern Territory (the Review)will inform the design of a secondary education system that is responsive to the diverse delivery contexts in the NT, reflects the rich cultural diversity among learners, and provides a pathway for all students to achieve success in line with their aspirations post-schooling.

The Review sets out an overarching goal to ensure that there is a guaranteed standard of local secondary school provision in all locations that can drive improved engagement and outcomes for all students.

Recommendations from the Review will be an integral component of a broader education reform package for the Territory which will consolidate existing departmental education strategies and recommendations from other reviews including the Review of Effective Enrolment and Students with Disability Funding Review.

This broader reform agenda is driven by a case for change that is:

  • Responding to the unique delivery context.
  • Building on the existing strengths of the system.
  • Striving for an excellent and equitable system, with high expectations for educational outcomes for all students.
  • Addressing the gap between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students.
  • Ensuring investment is targeted to need, and equitable.

The Review will support the department to deliver on strategic actions committed through the Education NT Strategy 2021-2025 and Education Engagement Strategy 2022-2031. The Review was conducted, by Deloitte Access Economics and the Northern Institute at Charles Darwin University, between November 2022 and October 2023.

Throughout 2024, the department will undertake further planning and consultation to prepare for implementation.
