Swimming and water safety education in Northern Territory schools
$3 million is being provided to enable Territory schools to deliver swimming and water safety lessons.
This funding provides the opportunity for all children in years 1 to 6 in the Northern Territory to learn how to swim and develop lifelong skills in water safety to reduce their risk of drowning and injury. The funding also supports Governments commitment to lowering the cost of living for families.
The swimming in schools program will be provided in addition to the Sports vouchers which means vouchers will not need to be used on swimming lessons.
What schools get
Government and non-government schools will be provided funding for each enrolled child in years 1 to 6 to support the delivery of swimming and water safety education programs.
Additional funding is available to support schools without access to a nearby pool to meet additional transport costs that may occur.
What students get
By the time children finish year 6 they will leave primary school with a swimming and water safety competency at or equivalent to level 7 of the Royal Life Saving Australia Swim and Survive program.
What other support is available
The Department of People, Sport and Culture currently administer three programs that support community access to swimming lessons:
- Urban sport voucher program
- Learn to swim voucher program
- Active regional and remote communities program
