Secondary education in the NT - what is changing?
The Northern Territory Government has finalised a new design for secondary schools in Darwin, Palmerston and Alice Springs.
- Darwin: 4 comprehensive high schools (years 7-12); 1 specialist industry, trade and technical college (years 10-12) and 1 higher education focussed college (years 10-12).
- Palmerston: 2 comprehensive high schools (years 7-12) at existing college sites in Driver and Rosebery.
- Alice Springs: one comprehensive high school (years 7-12), plus a new regional industry, trade and flexible education college (year 10-12).
The gradual transition of students will commence in 2026 in Darwin and Palmerston and 2027 in Alice Springs, with the full transition to the new design completed by the end of 2028.
The redesign aims to provide high-quality and accessible education and pathways across the NT and make government secondary schools a top choice for families in our urban centres.
The department will continue to work closely with schools, parents, teachers, and students to begin implementing this change.
