Background

The NT government commissioned the review in 2013 to get an informed understanding of the impact of programs and initiatives and to make recommendations to optimise education and training outcomes for Indigenous students.

A considerable amount of resources, both Territory and Commonwealth, have been committed to improving Indigenous education.

Yet the review found literacy and numeracy outcomes of remote and very remote Indigenous students remain well below those of non-Indigenous students and also below those of Indigenous students in other jurisdictions.

The review was independent of government and conducted by an experienced education consultant, Bruce Wilson, supported by a team from the Department of Education and Training.

Indigenous Education Strategy

The review report made a number of recommendations which were endorsed by government.

A 10-year Indigenous Education Strategy was developed to implement the recommendations of the review.
