More than 150 employees attended the Department of Education and Training's mid-year orientation on 7 to 8 July, providing an important opportunity for them to connect, learn and prepare for their roles across the Territory.

Participants included new teachers, principals, school-based staff and corporate employees from across the Northern Territory, interstate and overseas.

Held at the Darwin Convention Centre, the orientation featured presentations from senior departmental leaders, regional education teams and external stakeholders.

Attendees participated in sessions exploring the Territory’s history, culture and communities, as well as the NT Learning and Teaching Model, regional operations, emergency management, leadership, workforce services and professional support networks.

Representatives from the Northern Territory Education Union, Northern Territory Principals’ Association and Headspace also attended to help new staff navigate their transition into the department.

A key focus of the orientation was strengthening understanding of the department’s strategic direction. Participants learned about the department’s 5 priorities:

  • Boost literacy and numeracy.
  • Raise school attendance.
  • Hold parents accountable.
  • Attract and keep our teachers.
  • Create pathways to real jobs.
  • Improve student wellbeing.

Staff were also introduced to workplace wellbeing initiatives, professional learning opportunities and the support available to help them succeed in their new roles.

Orientation plays a vital role in ensuring new employees feel welcomed, informed and connected.

By building professional networks, introducing staff to key resources and fostering a shared understanding of departmental goals, the event helps employees transition confidently into their roles and contribute to improved outcomes for Territory learners from day one.
