Wanguri Primary School marks half a century of learning
Wanguri Primary School celebrated its 50th anniversary on Friday 14 August 2026, bringing together past and present students, staff and families to mark the milestone.
Established in 1976, Wanguri Primary School has grown immensely from its early years under Commonwealth administration, before responsibility transferred to the Northern Territory Government in 1978, into a thriving school of more than 400 students from Preschool to Year 6.
The school takes its name and much of its identity from the Wanguri people of East Arnhem Land. Its logo, the Barramundi, known as Damabila in Larrakia and Ratjuk in the language of the Wanguri people, reflects the school's connection to the Larrakia Traditional Owners on whose land it stands, as well as the Wanguri people after whom the school is named.
The anniversary celebrations included a smoking ceremony by the Larrakia Nation and a didgeridoo performance, as well as school tours, student performances and fun family activities.
A commemorative plaque was also unveiled, putting a permanent mark in the school grounds to honour the special occasion.
Acting Chief Executive Aderyn Chatterton, Acting Deputy Chief Executive Schools Miranda Watt and Acting Senior Director Education Darwin Stuart Dwyer were proud to attend and be with the school community as they reflected on the last 5 decades of learning in the Territory.
'Wanguri Primary School's story is a Territory story: a vibrant and strong school that is interwoven into the fabric of its community where 21 different nationalities learn side by side. Fifty years on, with rich, engaging teaching and learning experiences, and strong connections with families, students remain at the centre of everything the school does and that's something worth celebrating,' said Aderyn.
