Students explore careers through new Mining Cadets Program
In Term 3 Week 2 2026, Year 10 and 11 students from across Darwin took their first step towards exciting careers in the Northern Territory's mining industry through the new Mining Cadets Program.
Hosted by the Minerals Council of Australia NT, Charles Darwin University and the Department of Education and Training's Skills NT team, the program is designed to introduce students to the diverse and rewarding career opportunities available within one of the Territory's largest industries.
The immersive information day gave students the opportunity to engage with industry professionals, explore emerging technologies and participate in hands-on activities that showcased the wide range of careers available in mining.
From engineering and environmental management to trades, technology and business, students discovered that mining offers pathways for a broad range of interests and skills.
Launching in 2027, the Mining Cadets Program will provide selected senior secondary students with the opportunity to complete nationally recognised vocational education and training while remaining at school.
Students will also benefit from industry-led site visits, workplace learning experiences and direct engagement with mining professionals, helping them build practical skills and gain valuable insight into future career pathways.
The initiative reflects a strong partnership between education, industry and government, ensuring Territory students are equipped with the skills, knowledge and experience needed to support the Northern Territory's growing workforce and economic future.
