Nganmarriyanga School students keep swimming program afloat despite NT floods
Students from Nganmarriyanga School are finally getting the chance to learn swimming and water safety skills after weather and road conditions prevented their planned program from going ahead in 2025.
Moreover, recent flooding across the Northern Territory may have disrupted their Term 1 plans, but thanks to quick thinking and strong collaboration, students were still able to make a splash.
When flooding affected the Nganmarriyanga community resulting in evacuation to Darwin, the School of Sport Education NT (SSENT) seized the opportunity to coordinate a swimming and water safety program whilst students were in town.
In response, Royal Life Saving Society NT quickly pivoted to ensure students were able to participate in the Swim and Survive program.
This proactive approach ensured that students did not miss the opportunity to receive vital swimming and water safety education skills that are particularly important for young people living in the NT.
By utilising the students’ time in Darwin, the school has also achieved significant savings in travel time, accommodation, and associated costs that would have been required to deliver the program later in the year.
In addition, students have enjoyed accessing the larger and better-equipped facilities at Parap pool.
This outcome shows the incredible impact that’s possible when schools and organisations unite to support students’ learning.
What began as a challenge has transformed into a powerful example of teamwork, adaptability, and a shared commitment to keeping Territory students safe around water.
