Katherine South Primary School marks 50 years of learning

Katherine South Primary School was proud to celebrate 50 years of learning on Saturday 17 October 2026, marking a significant milestone birthday for the longest-standing Northern Territory Government school in Katherine.

Initially opening in 1976 before transferring to the NT Government in 1978, the school has remained a valued part of the community with around 200 students currently enrolled, built on 5 decades of relationships, family connections and commitment to students centred on strong connections, explicit teaching and high expectations.

The celebrations brought the Big Rivers community together to enjoy an array of family activities and delicious local food, as well as some special historical displays and thrilling helicopter rides.

Acting Deputy Chief Executive Schools Miranda Watt was grateful to attend and meet past and present teachers, students and families, reflecting on a strong history of the school.

Principal of Katherine South Primary School Chris Errington is proud of the achievement and looks forward to the future.

'Our focus is on continuing to build a positive school culture and strong community connections, grounded in trust, wellbeing and a genuine love of learning.'

'As we look to the next 50 years, we will strive to increase our enrolments and to continue building a school where every child is encouraged to embrace challenges and develop the confidence to pursue their potential. As always, we’ll stay true to our long-held motto: Be your best at KSPS.'

We extend our thanks and congratulations to the whole Katherine South Primary School team for their continued impact on Territory education.
