Introducing the 2026 NT Government Young Aboriginal Educator winner
Congratulations to Milikapiti School’s Elise Thornthwaite who was announced the winner of the 2026 Northern Territory Government Young Aboriginal Educator Award.
Elise is a proud Gamilaraay woman, preschool teacher, and Families as First Teachers educator. She is committed to culturally responsive and respectful early childhood education – helping create a safe and welcoming learning environment for the Territory’s youngest.
At Milikapiti School, Elise has created culturally strong, play-based programs that build school readiness and celebrate Tiwi culture. She helps strengthen family and community engagement, fostering strong partnerships with Elders and local organisations, ensuring learning reflects community identity and pride.
Both within and beyond the classroom her leadership makes a real difference.
Elise’s achievements were celebrated at the annual NT Young Achiever Awards (NTYAA) gala dinner on Friday 10 April 2026, surrounded in a room full of pride and gratitude.
We would like to thank Elise for her impactful work in supporting the NT education and training family.
