Schools as emergency shelters

Published

We often think of schools as the heart of the community where students, families and school staff intersect in one of life’s most important journeys – education.

Did you know, in many remote and regional communities, and some urban settings, the school is also the emergency shelter?

A dedicated departmental team work to ensure schools and their communities are prepared to enact emergency shelter plans at schools in the event of an emergency, such as cyclone, flood or fire.

Part of this work is ensuring there are community members trained to run a school as an emergency shelter. The team have developed a self-paced online training tool for those part of or joining an Emergency Shelter Group.

This training provides a comprehensive understanding of the Emergency Shelter Group, its role within the Northern Territory Emergency Management Arrangements, and key information you need if called to assist before, during or after an emergency.

If you would like to take the induction or learn more about being part of an Emergency Shelter Group, please go to Emergency Shelter Inductionn on the MyLearning website.
