LTANT conference wraps up with national award for Alice Springs educator
Language teachers from across the Territory gathered in Alice Springs last week for the annual Language Teachers’ Association of the Northern Territory (LTANT) Conference, held at the Alice Springs Language Centre.
The theme was ‘Transformative Technology in Language Classrooms Today’, and the program included sessions on AI, behaviour management, assessment tools and smart reporting.
The day ended with a special moment as local educator, Jannette McCormack received the National Patji Dawes Language Teachers Award. Jannette teaches Arrernte from Years 7 to 12 and has spent many years helping students connect with their language and culture. She develops classroom resources, plans and delivers lessons, assesses student progress and organises excursions to meet language workers and explore future job pathways.
Jannette’s grandchildren attended the ceremony, making the award presentation even more meaningful.
"To be recognised for my contribution to my community, family and work is such an honour," Jannette said. "It’s important for us as an Arrernte nation to stay strong and continue with this legacy."
Principal of Alice Springs Language Centre, Susan Moore said, “Jannette’s work is so important. She supports students to be proud of their languages and shows what’s possible when language and education come together.”
It was a day full of learning, pride and celebration.
