Barunga School principal kicks goals for others with volunteer award

Congratulations to Barunga School principal, Malcolm Hales, who was awarded the 2025 NT Volunteer of the Year as part of the annual NT Sports Awards.

Alongside leading the Barunga School community, Malcom dedicates an extraordinary amount of time to grassroots AFL in the Big Rivers region as a coach of the Arnhem Crows Senior Women’s Community Team.

In their inaugural year, 2020, they became the first remote team in Australia to compete in a senior women’s AFL competition.

As a passionate advocate for his sport and club, he has seen 4 premiership wins in the last 5 years and says it’s a thrill to be part of the club where he helps across coaching, mentoring and administration.

'It’s simply a lot of fun coaching a wide range of players, all with their own great stories and challenges,' he said.

An incredible recognition for a dedicated principal and leader, committed to breaking down barriers for students and the community both in the classroom and on the field. Well done, Malcom.
