Students at Barunga School become published authors and singers

Published

Barunga School students are published young authors and singers with their Shordi Krik (Shorty Creek) book and song they created in Kriol and English with the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF).

Their book was also one of 3 to be the face of 2023’s Indigenous Literacy Day in Sydney, where they sang the song at the Opera House to a TV audience of over 300,000 viewers.

All first copies of the book have sold out, making it is the highest selling book ever produced by ILF.

The song has also been downloaded over 36,000 times on Spotify and has been adopted by ILF’s ‘Busking for Change’ project, where it will be sung in over 150 schools across Australia in 2024.

“During their trip, the students met famed authors and ambassadors such as Shelley Ware, Richard Flanagan, Andy Griffiths, and Alison Lester,” Principal Malcolm Hales said.

“None of this would be possible without their teacher at the time Charlotte Jackson, children’s entertainer and actress Justine Clarke, and ILF Publishing Projects Editor Elizabeth Arrigo,” he said.
