Recognised for emergency response at National Resilience Awards

The department was recently awarded a highly commended at the 2023 National Resilience Awards ceremony in recognition of the response to the northern region flood emergency earlier this year.

The work recognised was our innovative approach to provide ‘education anywhere, anytime’ to student evacuees from affected remote communities – Kalkarindji, Dagaragu and Pigeon Hole.

The department enacted ‘pop up schools’ with host schools, Nightcliff Middle, Wulagi Primary, Malak Primary, Karama Primary and Yarralin welcoming displaced staff, and students into their school for continuation of learning.

This initiative not only ensured education remained a priority, but also provided a sense of structure and routine during a tumultuous time for staff and students.

Ross McHutcheon, Director Remote Schools Big Rivers collected the award on behalf of all who were instrumental in making the response to this emergency a success.

This achievement is a testament to the determination of staff and students and inspires us to continue serving communities with the same level of dedication in the face of future challenges.
