At this year’s Chief Minister’s Awards for Excellence in the Public Sector, our department was a highly commended finalist for 2 categories, and 3 of our staff were medal recipients.

For Advancing Aboriginal and Community Development, Angurugu School was recognised for their ‘Connected Beginnings’ initiative, that saw local staff leading the way in tracking their student’s development for school readiness.

In the Excellence in Customer Focused Workplace Practices and Service Delivery category, the NT Youth Voice Peak Group was recognised for their innovative student-focused approach to fostering an inclusive education shaped by those it serves.

Receiving medals for their significant contribution with a combined service of over 84 years was Gillen Primary School Principal Donna O’Brien, Senior Director Education, East Arnhem Haidee Dentith and retired Teacher Yalmay Yunupingu for her Aboriginal leadership.

Over the last 6 years, Donna has significantly improved the literacy, numeracy and wellbeing of every student, as shown in school outcomes through NAPLAN results and school survey feedback.

Haidee has led Laynhapuy Homelands School to support 22 students achieve their Certificate II in Conservation and Ecosystem Management, and 4 students from remote East Arnhem to achieve their NTCET.

Ms Yunupingu is known for her passion and deep commitment to bilingual education for Yirrkala, as well as her hard work to achieve the best possible outcomes for all Yolŋu children and young people.

Congratulations - all outstanding achievements and a true testament to some of our incredible initiatives and dedicated staff.
