World Teachers’ Day NT Awards
The World Teachers’ Day NT Awards (formerly known as the Teaching in the Territory Excellence Awards) recognise the achievements of principals, teachers, leaders and support staff in Northern Territory Government schools.
This year marks 20 years of recognising and celebrating outstanding teachers in NT Government schools.
Nominations for the 2025 World Teachers’ Day NT Awards open on Monday 14 April and close on Friday 23 May 2025.

2025 World Teachers’ Day Awards - Categories and Criteria
Categories and criteria
All nominees must:
- be employed by the NT Government and/or be working in a NT Government school or corporate office at the time of nomination
- have worked as a teacher/trainer/principal or support person in the NT for the last 3 years or more
- meet the eligibility criteria for the award category below.
Category name | Proposed eligibility criteria |
---|---|
Northern Territory Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Educator of the Year | Eligible nominees include principals, school leaders, teachers, assistant teachers and support staff of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. |
Northern Territory Corporate Based Support Person of the Year | Eligible nominees include DET corporate staff providing support to schools. Can be an individual or a team. |
Northern Territory Early Childhood Educator of the Year | Eligible nominees include early childhood educators who work in preschool, Families as First Teachers (including Stay Play Learn), childcare and transition settings. |
Northern Territory Inclusion Educator of the Year | Eligible nominees include special education teachers, school leaders, teachers and support staff. |
Northern Territory Leader in Education of the Year | Eligible nominees include teaching principals, assistant principals, senior teachers, Highly Accomplished and Lead Teachers, and mentor teachers. |
Northern Territory Primary Educator of the Year | Eligible nominees include primary teachers (Year 1 – 6). |
Northern Territory Principal of the Year | Eligible nominees include executive contract principals. Only principals at levels 4 to 7 can be nominated in the Principal of the Year category. |
Northern Territory Secondary Educator of the Year | Eligible nominees include middle years and senior secondary teachers (years 7–12), including vocational education trainers, specialist teachers (e.g., sport, drama, hospitality) and coordinators who are Department of Education and Training employees. |
Northern Territory School Based Support Person of the Year | Eligible nominees include assistant teachers, relief teachers, contract teachers, part time teachers, support staff, front office administration staff, attendance officers, business managers and paraprofessionals working in classroom contexts. |
* Note the Northern Territory Vocational Education Trainer of the Year category has been combined with the Northern Territory Secondary Educator of the Year category. Please use this category to nominate a Vocational Education Trainer staff member.
