Chief Minister's Literacy Achievement Awards

The Chief Minister’s Literacy Achievement Awards (CMLAA) recognise the literacy achievements of students in every transition to year 9 (inclusive) class in government and non-government Northern Territory schools.

All successful students receive a letter of congratulations from the Chief Minister, as well as an award certificate to mark their success, presented at end of year school ceremonies.

The 2023 award nomination process will commence on Monday 11 September 2023 and will close on Friday 13 October 2023.

The online forms will become active on Monday 11 September 2023.

One student from each transition to year 9 class in every school in the Northern Territory is eligible to be nominated for one of the 6 award categories. For example:

  • if there are 12 classes in your school, 12 students can receive an award
  • for composite classes, for example, year 1/2 or year 4/5, only nominate one student for an award per composite class
  • for small schools that have one class, only one student can be nominated to receive an award
  • for middle schools, one nomination per homeroom or literacy class.

Description that will appear in the student letter

1. Most Outstanding Communicator

I understand that you have demonstrated excellent communication skills in your school or local community. Your ability to communicate effectively with others is a valuable skill.

2. Most Imaginative Visual

I understand that you have produced an excellent range of imaginative visual texts throughout the year. Your ability to express yourself through words and pictures is a valuable skill.

3. Most Imaginative Written

I understand that you use your vivid imagination to generate new ideas and that your writing is lively and expressive. Your ability to use written language to express yourself is a valuable skill.

4. Most Improved Oral Language

I understand that you increased your confidence and developed your skills in oral language throughout the year. This is a valuable lifelong skill and makes you a role model for other learners.

5. Most Improved Reading

I understand that you have made impressive achievements in your reading throughout the year. This is a valuable lifelong skill and makes you a role model for other learners.

6. Most Improved Writing

I understand that you have made impressive achievements in your writing throughout the year. This is a valuable lifelong skill and makes you a role model for other learners.
