Education Act

After two years in development with contributions from parents, teachers, students, community members, departmental officers and other stakeholders, the new Education Act was passed by the Legislative Assembly in December 2015.

The new Act and Regulations commenced on 1 January 2016.

The Act and Regulations provide a framework for delivering high-quality contemporary education to develop students’ potential and maximise their educational achievement.

Work is underway to update policies, guidelines and other information sources to reflect the new Education Act and Regulations.

Home Education Policy Consultation

The Education Act 2015 (the Act) includes a number of changes to the provision of home education in the Northern Territory. The department is undertaking a review of the current home education administration, and policy and guidelines advice to ensure alignment with the Act. New Home Education policy and guidelines have been drafted that outline proposed changes to current processes that will enable the department and parents to comply with the Act.

The department is seeking feedback from home education parents, principals and department staff on how the proposed changes to home education administration and the policy and guidelines will impact them.

  • Consultation sessions will be held during the week commencing 26 September in Darwin and Alice Springs. People who would like to attend should email their expression of interest to by Monday 19 September 2016.
  • Written responses are also welcome via The closing date for accepting written responses will be COB Friday 30 September.
