School representative body committees

The involvement of school representative bodies in the school's decision making can be supported through committees.

Committees can also enable parents, who are not on the school representative body, to take an active role in contributing to the school's decision making.

Role of committees

The role of committees includes all of the following:

  • investigate and report to the school representative body on specific issues
  • make recommendations to the school representative body.

Decisions made by the school representative body in relation to committee recommendations are final and may not be overturned by the committee.

Membership and terms of reference

A committee should be chaired by a member of the school representative body and be guided by clear terms of reference.

Committees can be made up of parents and other school community representatives who are not members of the school representative body.

Examples of committees

The below are examples of school committees.

Finance and budget committee

The role of this committee can include any of the following:

  • assess risks and suggest areas to be considered or adjustments that need to be made to the budget
  • finalise budgets for the school representative body's approval
  • make recommendations on voluntary parent contributions.

Strategic planning committee

The role of the committee can include any of the following:

  • development of the school’s strategic improvement plan
  • monitor and review progress against the improvement plan and annual operational plans
  • engage parents in the school planning and improvement process.

Policy committee

The role of the committee can include any of the following:

  • assist the school representative body in the development of school policies
  • ensure appropriate consultation with parents on proposed policies.
