Yarralin Olympics 2021

Teamwork and talent were on show at the recent Yarralin School ‘Olympic Games’.

The one-day event was inspired by studies of Indigenous sports role models, such as Cathy Freeman and Patty Mills.

The Olympic torch flagged the start of contests in javelin, long jump, football and shot put.

Teacher Sarah Brazil said: “Before the competitions, students marched behind their collaboratively designed flags, emphasising connectedness, fair play and teamwork.

“The Games revealed skills and sportsmanship, pride in obstacles overcome, and delight in the rewards of success.

“To be a hero in sports — and in life — there ought to be a childhood of dreaming, encouragement and opportunity.”
