Henbury on Aralia chasing another award

The Henbury on Aralia coffee shop is a candidate in the upcoming NT Disability Services and Inclusion Awards.

The awards focus on individuals, services, organisations, businesses and programs dedicated to improving the lives of people with a disability.

The coffee shop collected the Excellence in Innovation Award and Overall Award for Excellence in 2019.

The transition to work training facility, catering for the school’s middle and senior years’ students, opened on 5 April last year.

Principal Sarah Corry said the precinct offers a full barista set-up, kitchen, café and outdoor seating, and a retail service counter.

“Each week more than 15 students are instructed as baristas, waiters, sales assistants, food preparers and servers,” she said.

“Other students are responsible for the giftware and plants sold in the café space, cooking, maintenance, upcycling furniture and the greenhouse.

“Students trained at Henbury on Aralia have an opportunity to work weekends for the full retail award wage.

“For many of our students this is their first paid job. They feel responsible, proud and free.”

Ms Corry said Henbury on Aralia allows students to practise skills learned in vocational courses and work experience in a safe and supportive environment.

“The café is intimately connected with our Middle Years Skill Set Program, comprising more than 90 students in one of nine learning options, including hospitality, retail, horticulture and woodwork,” she said.

“The café space sells products of the program, including mahogany boards, wooden spoons, cushion covers, mango chutney, pencil cases, headbands, coasters, bookmarks, beeswax wraps and candles.

“The profits from Henbury on Aralia finances the Middle Years Skill Set Program, continuing the work skills development of our students.”
