Titjikala School assistant teacher Roger Wilyuka was twice honoured at the Northern Territory Young Achiever Awards at Skycity, Friday 13 May.

The awards acknowledge, encourage, and promote the positive achievements of young Territorians, and the 23-year-old was named Northern Territory Young Achiever of the Year and collected the NT Government Young Aboriginal Educator Award.

The avid footballer leads Boys can Read Too, a program for fathers and sons, runs school holiday and sports activities, and joins community elders for school council meetings.

“I feel happy to be working with young fathers, and I also really love working with the young kids at my school,” he said. “It is great for me to be teaching them, and most important to be encouraging the younger ones in school, and to be working with them one on one.”

Roger was also recognised for his outstanding commitment to teaching and learning, for inspiring his peers, students and the community.

He won the Glencore McArthur River Mining Regional and Rural Initiative Award at the 2014 Young Achiever Awards.
