Students’ sojourn builds language proficiency
A trip to Japan has been an exciting and educational adventure for 11 students studying Japanese at the Alice Springs Language Centre.
The students, who visited Tokyo, Osaka, Hiroshima and Kyoto, were encouraged to use Japanese in ordinary tasks, such as buying subway tickets and navigating cities.
In visits to three schools — Kaetsu High School, Tsukinoki High School, and Osaka Mino Jiyu Gakuen — the tourists socialised with Japanese students, helping them learn English while receiving instruction in Japanese.
The Osaka Mino Jiyu Gakuen stopover was an opportunity to home stay with Japanese families, who were delighted the students wanted to make their acquaintance and learn their language.
Visits to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Museum, shrines, temples and Zen gardens were reflective experiences, and added a spiritual dimension to the trip.
