Word fest gets huge response
More than 400 aspiring journalists attended the inaugural Writers Big Day Out at Taminmin College.
The 18 August event attracted students from across the Palmerston and Rural Region, including wordsmiths from Humpty Doo, Berry Springs, Girraween, Bees Creek and Howard Springs primary schools, Gunbalanya School, Batchelor and Jabiru area schools, and Taminmin College.
Taminmin College principal, Miriam McDonald, said a variety of “provocations” were set-up to inspire students to “think and write outside the box”.
“It was an absolutely amazing day; kids were getting inspired to write and it really was a community-oriented environment,” she said.
“Students encouraged each other, and learning is best when students are engaged and motivated.
“Writing is a key skill that our students need, and this is a wonderful way for them to gain rich experiences so they can enjoy the process of writing.”
The student’s work will be displayed at Coolalinga Central shopping centre during Writers’ Week.
