Student band to take stage with famed performers

NT Music School rock band Sev and the Explosions will support an iconic cast of Australian musicians at the upcoming One Tropical Day concert.

The nine-member group of students from years 9 to 11 will back Ice House, Pseudo Echo, Kate Cebrano, 1927, and Jon Stevens from Noiseworks.

The band owes much of its development to the Rock School program of the NT Music School, an initiative to enhance song writing skills, stage craft, band craft and musicianship.

NTMS regional and remote programs manager, Simon Pedder, said Sev and the Explosions were a crowd favourite at last year’s One Tropical Day, supporting The Angels, Baby Animals, and indie rock band Gaia — winner of the 2016 Battle of the School Bands.

“This is a really big thing for these young musicians, but I don’t think the reality will hit them until they are up on stage at the amphitheatre, supporting many Gen X musical heroes,” he said.

“Playing gigs at Happy Yess and performing with the music school has qualified them as a highly competent support act.

“They are predominantly a rock band, and in line with the all Aussie acts they’ll play only Australian rock songs at this performance.”
