A celebration of diverse musical cultures

The Freedom Concert — a June 2 community concert at Nhulunbuy — attracted performers from the local primary and high school, and high school boarders at Nhulunbuy’s Dawurr.

The show drew inspiration from the Yothu Yindi album, and the liberty to move between the styles and rhythms of Yolngu, Balanda and African music.
Nhulunbuy NT Music School teacher and concert producer Bob Pearse said: “The unique experience was the embodiment of reconciliation at work, involving people with different backgrounds and ages working to forge new music that straddles different cultural traditions.”
The Artists in Schools program assisted primary and high school students to develop music pieces using percussion, guitars and horns, and involving singers and dancers.
The NT Music School filmed the performance for episode 92 of VAMPtv .
