Travelling early childhood teacher in line for major award
A teacher with a passion for social justice, human rights, equity and universal access to education, has been nominated for a Northern Territory Education and Care Award.
Alice Springs-based Kara Blair, an early childhood teacher visiting four very remote communities with the Mobile Early Childhood Service, has been recommended for the Emerging Professional Educator award category.
Beginning her career in 2004, Kara Blair is “extremely passionate” about early childhood and care, strongly collaborating with principals, teachers, child health providers and departments to help meet the needs of all communities.
“I believe that every child has a right to education, and I am particularly passionate about young children accessing high quality early education,” she said. “Research shows that children experience a rapid period of brain development before the age of three, and this builds foundations for learning later in life.
“I have been successfully delivering Mobile Early Childhood Service programs since 2015, supporting assistant teachers who deliver preschool programs, or providing parenting programs with early childhood programs for children up to five years old.”
The comprehensively qualified teacher recently returned from a study tour of Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Chile, learning more about Indigenous history and perspectives on early childhood education, and spending time in isolated Peruvian communities.
Kara Blair believes empowering families in the health and education of their children is paramount.
“When I visit remote communities I spend time building relationships with local leaders, families and children, to understand their different needs,” she said.
“The nomination for the Emerging Professional Educator Award recognises my work with the Mobile Early Childhood Service and my growing skills as an early childhood teacher.”
Kara Blair plans to attend the World Indigenous Peoples Conference on Education, to be hosted in Canada next year. The Northern Territory Education and Care Awards will be held on Tuesday 4 October 2016 at Parliament House.
